Enhanced gradients feature

With the new interaction of gradients fill, right on your object, you can set gradient in any angle, position, and elliptical dimensions. Add and edit colors using sliders — all with immediate feedback where you work. Besides, you will get surprised by defining the opacity (0~100%) of any individual color stop in a gradient. Reveal underlying objects and images, and create rich color and texture mixes using multiple layers, knockouts, and cover-up fades.

Multiple artboards in CS4

Amazing feature now in CS4 version. You are allow to create multiple artboards in a single file instead of each file only can contain one artboard in the earlier versions. Maximum of 100 artboards with varying sizes, moveable and display them with your own preference (overlapping, side by side, or stacked) that foresee will be getting easier for designers to organise their projects to work on. Of course no doubt you certainly can "Save, export, and print artboards independently or together, Save a selected range or all artboards as a multipage PDF file".

Scalable text frame and text

To enlarge text frame in order to create more space for typing text, click the Selection tool (V) to show the bounding box, then click-and-drag any of the corner point to resize the text frame without affecting the original font/type size.

In contrast, if you have selected a text frame with the Selection tool, to enlarge the font size, just to select the Scale tool (S) or Free Transform tool (E), any adjustments and dragging of the text frame certainly will scale the size of the text inside the frame. Hold shift while dragging will proportional increase the font size.

Filters vs. Effects

The main difference between the two above is, Effects are editable in setting and I would say are more flexible, allowing us to re-edit the effect through the Appearance palette (Window>Appearance), even though we had applied the effect; but do consider they require more memory and processor efficiency. Filters are so called "permanent rendered effect" (though we can choose Undo from the Edit menu), but typically they are unable to re-edit the setting after the files have been saved and closed or after the application quit.

Show/Hide bounding box

Here's a shortcut to show and hide the bounding box (Command-Shift-B; PC: Control-Shift-B). The bounding box is a great way to resize objects without switching to the Scale tool. But do sometimes the bounding box is very distracting, so the option to toggle on/off is quite a useful tip.

Locking/Unlocking guides

By default, all guides that you add to a document are auto-locked. To unlocking all the guides in one quick step, press Mac: Command-Option-; or PC: Control-Alt-;. To works opposite: Once you've unlocked all the guides, use the same shortcut to lock all guides.

Quick way to delete from the palette

To delete anything from a palette, without getting a dialog like this example asking you to confirm your choice, hold down the Mac: Option key or PC: Alt key as you click on the palette's Trash icon. This applies to brushes, swatches, layers, etc.

Timing is a key factor

One of the important principles of using keyboard modifiers is that the same key will have different effects, depending on when you use it. For example, with the Direct Selection tool (A) active, holding down the Option key (PC: Alt key; MAC: Option key) will select the entire path. If you don't let go of the Option key while you drag and move, you'll get duplicate. So, to move a path without duplicating it, hold the Option key while pressing and click to select the path, release the Alt/Option key before dragging the path and move.

Switching palette's view

Most of the Illustrator palettes have more than one display size, reason for users to save more working space without closing palettes. Multiple sizes in some cases. You can use a palette's flyout menu to choose Show Options or Hide Options, or just to double-click on the tab at the top of each palette. To see if a palette has multiple sizes, just keep double-clicking on the tab to switch among the views size.
